Recently, there has been a rise in the number of cases of Canine Influenza throughout Southern California. Canine Influenza (also known as “dog flu”) is a contagious respiratory disease in dogs. Like the flu in humans, the canine form is spread via respiratory droplets. Infected dogs can pass this illness to others through barking, coughing, and breathing/panting. It can also be passed by contaminated objects (kennel surfaces, food and water bowls, collars and leashes), and by people moving between infected and uninfected dogs. Dogs in shelters, boarding/grooming facilities are most at risk. However, dogs that visit dog parks, dog beaches, and other public places where there is proximity to other dogs are also highly at risk.

To preserve the safety of all canine patients that enter The Drake Center, starting December 15th, we will be requiring that all dogs boarding at The Drake Center will have a current Canine Influenza Vaccine. With the upcoming holiday season, it is imperative that we take this initiative in requiring all dogs to be vaccinated to protect them from this highly contagious illness while boarding/bathing at our facility. As with other vaccines, there is a series of two vaccines 3-4 weeks apart for the first year. The vaccine is annual after the initial series.

We will be reaching out to clients directly who have already scheduled boarding/bathing appointments within the coming weeks to arrange for their dogs to receive the Canine Influenza vaccine. For your convenience, we will also be offering a Canine Influenza Vaccine Package where you will be able to purchase your pet’s series of vaccines in one simple transaction.

We would like to thank you for your cooperation and if you have any questions or need to schedule your pet’s next appointment, please feel free to contact us here.
